In October 2009, the Ontario government launched the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program to encourage the installation and manufacturing of solar PV in the province. 20 year fixed-rate contracts, based on a declining pay scale, are made available for projects of all sizes based on power produced. In addition to FIT contracts there are also net metering solar opportunities, these installations allow buildings and homes to offset their current electricity costs at prevailing market rates.

PV installations can operate for many years with little maintenance or intervention after their installation, so after the initial capital cost of building any solar power plant, operating costs are extremely low compared to other alternative power technologies.
